Where Every Child Matters: Easterseals Delivers Specialized Education and Care to Area Families

In 1907, businessman Edgar Allen lost his son in a streetcar accident. The lack of adequate services available to save his son prompted Allen to sell his business and begin a fund-raising campaign to build a hospital in his hometown of Alyria, Ohio. Through this hospital, Allen was surprised to learn that children with disabilities were often hidden from public view. In 1919, inspired to make a difference Allen founded the National Society for Crippled Children, the first organization of its kind. Today this organization is known as Easterseals.

For over 100 years Easterseals has been leading the way to 100% equity, inclusion and access for children and adults with disabilities. Easterseals Western and Central Pennsylvania (ESWCPA) provides services for children and adults with physical, intellectual, and emotional disabilities, across 47 counties in Pennsylvania. Locations include Pittsburgh, Johnstown, State College, York and Franklin.

In the Pittsburgh area ESWCPA’s Approved Private School (APS) program is licensed through Pennsylvania Department of Education and Pennsylvania Bureau of Private Academic Schools and offers 3 locations in the North, South and East part of the city.

Our school programs are built on more than 50 years of experience supporting young children ages 3-10 during their most important developmental years. Through a full-day, traditional, Monday – Friday school program, we provide individualized education and therapeutic services in a nurturing setting. With a low 3:1 student to teacher ratio, each child receives the personal attention they need to meet their academic goals, grow, learn and thrive in a safe, caring, and engaging environment.
