If you or a loved one is a veteran recovering from a stroke, amputation, spinal cord injury or another complex medical condition, it is important to know that inpatient rehabilitation may be an option that could improve your recovery.

A higher level of care 

Unlike nursing homes or other post-acute settings, inpatient rehabilitation hospitals provide a hospital-level of care focused on intensive therapy. Patients receive a minimum of three hours of therapy per day, five days a week, including physical, occupational and speech therapy. This level of intensity helps patients build up their strength and return to their highest level of independence.

Care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team that meets often to create and adjust a personalized care plan based on your unique goals. Patients also benefit from frequent physician visits, 24/7 nursing care and access to pharmacists, dietitians and case managers to support every aspect of recovery.

In contrast, skilled nursing facilities often provide less frequent therapy, fewer physician visits and longer stays.

Our hospitals also offer access to specialized services such as dialysis and respiratory therapy, as well as support groups for both patients and their families.

Understanding your coverage 

Many veterans are unaware they can receive care outside the VA system. Through the VA Community Care Network (VA CCN), eligible veterans may choose Encompass Health for inpatient rehabilitation if they meet medical criteria.
