Stronger Minds, Stronger Communities: Building a Dementia Friendly Future in Allegheny County

Dementia is not just a personal health issue—it’s a growing public health challenge reshaping the future of Allegheny County.

Today, our county has the second-highest proportion of older adults among the 40 largest counties in the nation, and that number is rising fast. By 2030, the population aged 65 and older is projected to grow by 40 percent. With this shift comes an urgent reality: Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) are the third leading cause of death in Allegheny County, according to preliminary figures from 2025.

But there is a path forward—and it starts with all of us.

To meet this moment, the Allegheny County Health Department partnered with 13 local organizations to form the Allegheny BOLD Coalition (ABC). BOLD stands for Building Our Largest Dementia Infrastructure—a coordinated, community-driven effort to reduce the risk of dementia in our communities by increasing awareness, access to resources, and healthy aging—tailored to every stage of life.

At its core, the BOLD Coalition is about connection: connecting people to knowledge, to care, and to each other.

Healthy brains start with healthy communities. That’s why ABC focuses first on education. Through partnerships with community groups and healthcare providers, the coalition promotes simple, science-backed habits that protect brain health—like getting 150 minutes of physical activity each week and eating foods that nourish the brain, including leafy greens, berries, nuts, olive oil, and fish. ABC helps remove barriers by linking residents to exercise programs, cooking classes, and resources that make healthy foods more accessible and affordable.

Early detection is another critical priority. A recent county health survey found that nearly two-thirds of adults aged 45 and older who noticed cognitive changes had not spoken to a healthcare professional. ABC is working to change that by expanding access to memory screenings, increasing awareness of early warning signs, and training healthcare providers to deliver timely, compassionate care. The coalition is making it easier to openly talk about memory concerns.

The BOLD Coalition is also building a stronger network for caregivers and people living with dementia. From support groups and memory cafés to training opportunities and wellness programs, ABC is helping families navigate the journey with dignity, understanding, and community.

This work is grounded in a simple but powerful idea: together, we can reduce the risk of dementia—through education, early action, and community support. With trusted local partners and shared commitment, Allegheny County is building a future where brain health is a priority for everyone.

And that future depends on you.
