Seniors Helping Seniors® In-Home Care Recognizes Military Caregivers During Month of the Military Caregiver

In recognition of Month of the Military Caregiver, Seniors Helping Seniors® in-home care is honoring military caregivers who often go unnoticed. Observed each May, the month recognizes more than 5 million Americans who care for wounded, ill or aging veterans and service members.

Whether they are spouses, family members, friends or neighbors, military caregivers play a critical role in helping veterans live with greater comfort, dignity and independence. Their work is essential, yet many of these individuals “toil in relative obscurity,” according to a Rand Corporation study. Seniors Helping Seniors® Southwestern PA and Pittsburgh Northeast are committed to bringing greater awareness to their impact while offering in-home support that helps relieve some of the day-to-day demands they face.

“Caregivers are an integral part of the recovery process and overall quality of life for many of our nation’s veterans,” said C.J. Girod, President of Seniors Helping Seniors® Southwestern PA. “But the responsibility can be overwhelming. As a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Community Care Network Provider for the Homemaker and Home Health Aide Care and Respite Care programs, our goal is to provide reliable support, from personal care assistance to light household chores, so caregivers do not have to manage everything on their own.”

Unlike federal holidays, the Month of the Military Caregiver is a time of reflection and recognition rather than formal observance. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing commitment military caregivers provide every day. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, family caregivers offer an average of more than 24 hours of care per week, with 25% dedicating over 40 hours weekly.

Seniors Helping Seniors® in-home care works alongside these caregivers by offering flexible, non-medical services delivered by compassionate senior caregivers. With help ranging from transportation and meal preparation to companionship and assistance with activities of daily living, families gain added peace of mind and caregivers gain much-needed breathing room.

“Our model is built around connection, respect and community,” said Travis Hudson, Owner of Seniors Helping Seniors® Pittsburgh Northeast. “This month, we are proud to recognize the caregivers who quietly give so much and stand beside them with meaningful support.”
