Dr. Mouhanad Al-Fakih, Medical Director, Westmoreland Manor

Q: How did you come to this position; if it was an internal promotion, how long have you been with Westmoreland Manor?

I have been on staff at Westmoreland Manor since October 2021, originally under the directorship of Dr. Thomas DeGregory. When Dr. DeGregory retired, I was asked to step in as transition Medical Director and was later appointed as the permanent Medical Director.

Q: What was your background before now?

I am a board-certified internist in community practice and a certified Hospice Medical Director. I also hold medical staff privileges at the local hospitals. Since beginning my career in 2020, I have served as Medical Director for two other skilled nursing facilities, which gave me extensive experience in long-term care.

Q: Please tell us about the services offered by the facility.

Westmoreland Manor provides comprehensive skilled nursing and long-term care services to residents of Westmoreland County and surrounding areas. Our focus is on high-quality, patient-centered care that supports not only medical needs, but also emotional and social well-being.

Q: What are your responsibilities?

As Medical Director, my responsibilities include overseeing clinical care, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations, guiding the medical staff, collaborating with nursing leadership, and promoting quality improvement initiatives. I also work to maintain strong communication with families, staff, and the community.

Q: Are you expecting to make any changes in any area?

My focus is on continuing to build on the strong foundation already in place. I aim to strengthen quality-of-care initiatives, support staff development, and ensure we remain aligned with best practices in geriatric and long-term care medicine.

Q: How long have you worked in this particular field?

I have been practicing since 2000, with several years of direct experience in skilled nursing facility leadership and long-term care.

Q: Why did you choose this line of work?

Even though I manage a large number of patients, I find caring for this vulnerable population deeply rewarding. Long-term care allows me to combine medical expertise with compassion and continuity, which makes a meaningful impact on residents’ lives.

Q: Westmoreland Manor is the largest care facility in the county and one of the largest in the state. Is being in charge of a facility this large a daunting task?

It is certainly a significant responsibility, but I view it as a privilege. The scale of Westmoreland Manor means we touch many lives, and with the support of a strong team, I am confident we can continue to excel in delivering care.

Q: Please comment on the fact that WM is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year.

I am very proud to be part of Westmoreland Manor during its 175th anniversary. This milestone is a powerful testament to the Manor’s longstanding service to the community and the trust placed in its leadership and staff over generations.

Q: What do you expect to be the biggest challenge in your new position?

The biggest challenge will be continuing to provide the highest quality and most cost-effective care while maintaining financial independence and ensuring we remain a leader in long-term care in the county.

Q: What do people need to know when contacting you about WM’s services?

People should know that Westmoreland Manor is committed to providing compassionate, comprehensive care. We welcome families, residents, and community members to reach out with questions, and I value open communication to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Q: Anything else you would like to include?

I would like to emphasize how proud I am to work alongside such a dedicated team of professionals. Together, we remain committed to honoring the Manor’s tradition of service while continuing to adapt and grow to meet the needs of our community.
