Energy Assistance Programs You Need To Know About This Winter

Peoples’ Customer Assistance Program (CAP) allows income-eligible customers to pay a gas bill based on their household income rather than usage. Most participants pay just 4–6 percent of their total monthly pre-tax income, making energy costs predictable and manageable. CAP participants may also earn credits to reduce past-due balances faster.

Next, the Emergency Repair Program fully covers the cost of repair or replacement of broken equipment or gas lines for income eligible households. Addressing these needs now, before safety issues surface or winter weather arrives, ensures your home stays safe and warm all season long.

In addition to Peoples’ own programs, several partner and federal assistance options can provide even more relief. The Dollar Energy Fund (DEF) offers one-time grants up to $500 for customers facing financial hardship or unexpected expenses.

For ongoing seasonal help, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) offers annual grants of up to $1,000 toward heating costs. LIHEAP has helped thousands of Pennsylvanians manage winter energy expenses. LIHEAP funding is limited and distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, making it important to apply early.
