Can I Still Enjoy a Glass of Wine?

What People with MS Should Know About Alcohol

If you have multiple sclerosis and enjoy an occasional alcoholic beverage, it's important to understand how alcohol may affect your symptoms, medications, and overall health. Consider asking your healthcare provider these questions:

  1. Can alcohol interact with any of my medications?
Many medications used to treat MS symptoms—including those for muscle spasms, pain, anxiety, depression, and sleep problems—can increase drowsiness or dizziness when combined with alcohol.

  2. Could alcohol make my symptoms worse?
Alcohol may temporarily worsen balance problems, fatigue, blurred vision, numbness, or difficulty concentrating. Ask whether any of your current symptoms could be affected by drinking.

  3. Is it safe for me to drink if I have balance or walking difficulties?
People with MS who experience unsteadiness or frequent falls may be at increased risk for injury when drinking alcohol.

  4. How much alcohol is considered safe?
Your doctor can help determine whether moderate drinking is appropriate based on your age, overall health, medications, and disease status.

  5. Are there reasons I should avoid alcohol altogether?
Certain medical conditions, medication combinations, liver problems, or a history of substance misuse may make alcohol an unsafe choice.
