Two Decades of Summer Camp for All

Do parentsSummer camp is one of those quintessential summer experiences, and for many children, the choices are quite numerous. However, for parents of children with special needs, finding a summer camp that can fully (and safely) welcome their child can be a challenge.

Enter Camp Laugh-A-Lot, an inclusive day camp for children and adults with developmental, intellectual and physical disabilities, and mental health challenges. Arc Human Services, a nonprofit provider of programs and services to 500 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental illness across 11 southwestern Pennsylvania counties, has been hosting Camp Laugh-A-Lot since 1999. Camp takes place twice each year; a seven-week summer camp plus a one-week winter camp during the school break. Participants must be at least five years old; there is no upper age limit.

Quimber Nutter, Education and Activities Supervisor for Arc Human Services, manages Camp Laugh-A-Lot, which includes a wide variety of structured, supervised activities: arts and crafts, music, games, swimming, parties, and field trips. “The activities provide fun, socialization, and education,” she explains. “Camp Laugh-A-Lot helps participants develop and maintain life skills and social skills, which can be lost over the summer when school is out. Outings are especially popular; we go to the museums, the zoo, and other great places.” Weekly activities also include presenters visiting the camp, like a magician, a feathered friend from the Aviary, or another unique guest.

Going to camp is a traditional American experience that provides fun along with valuable opportunities to learn new things and make friends. According to Quimber Nutter, “Camp is an enriching experience for anyone and it builds a ton of self-esteem and confidence. In our camp, the low staff to camper ratio also provides the time and attention required to ensure safety and inclusion for all.”

Camp Laugh-A-Lot is celebrating its 20th year and welcomes about 50 participants each week. The camp takes place at the Vernon C. Neal Sportsplex, an indoor recreation center in Washington PA, Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. The 2019 summer camp season begins June 17 and ends on August 2 with a carnival that is open to the entire community.
