Breast Cancer Resources in Southwestern Pennsylvania

More than any other cancer, breast cancer is unique to each woman, and so the journey to survivorship is unique as well. For this reason, every woman’s treatment must be individualized, and the resources that she chooses to support herself must fit her needs exactly. No matter what her individual needs are, all women who are newly diagnosed, recovering or living with breast cancer have one thing in common – they all need information.

“Knowledge is power,” says Tara L. Grahovac, M.D., a board certified surgeon who specializes in breast surgery and treatment at St. Clair Hospital’s Breast Care Center. “Patients initially come in feeling overwhelmed and afraid; they become empowered by knowledge and it turns things around for them. My job is to have the knowledge and expertise, and to educate my patients. We also encourage patients to take advantage of the many supportive services that are available to them, here at St. Clair and throughout the community.”

For Julie C., the support she received from a breast cancer support group was encouraging and reassuring. “It means so much to be able to talk to someone who has been in your shoes and has come through it well. I learned so much from the women in that group – ways to cope, tips for managing side effects, and staying positive. Breast cancer can be a lonely experience but a support group makes you feel less alone. You feel cared for.”
