Battling Bikes for Breast Cancer Awareness October 24
By Brian Higgins

The Wilfred R. Cameron Wellness Center is please to host its 10th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October. Many of us now know that once October begins we recognize that the pink colors we see on professional athletes and in businesses are for breast cancer awareness. At the Wilfred R. Cameron Wellness Center we like to bring the fight for a cure a little closer to home. From pink banners around the center, pink "Join the Fight" t-shirts in our pro-shop and our "Remembrance Wall", support is received in an overwhelming fashion. This is most evident in our Battling Bikes event that is now in its third consecutive year.

Battling Bikes is a 12 hour event when members and nonmembers 'cycle for the cure' on studio cycling or recumbent bicycles. Participants don their favorite pink apparel, donate a minimum of $5 to register and ride for a 30 minute time slot. There are five teams led by our very own studio cycling instructors. Many of the teams ride for a loved one who has or is battling breast cancer in tribute.

Everyone is a winner but of course we always have prizes as well! The first way to win is to be the team that travels the furthest distance as a team in the 12 hour ride. The team at the Wilfred R. Cameron Wellness Center records the participant's distance traveled every 30 minutes. The second way to win is to be the team that collects the most donations. Participants are encouraged to try and get people passing by to donate to their team. (This is enhanced by having the bikes immediately at our entrance!) The final way to win is what some people consider the most fun and that is to be the team that has the best costumes. Previous costumes have included pink fairy wings, pink tutus, pink boas and various pink wigs. Teams are in constant competition to win all three different challenges. This makes for a day of fun for a great cause!

Battling Bikes is a great competition that year after year increases in popularity. Last year the Wilfred R. Cameron Wellness Center raised over $2,000. All of the donations were given to the Washington Health System's Women's Center. If you're interested in helping a great cause and having some fun while doing it, feel free to stop by and join the fight against breast cancer!
