How to Choose a Home Health Service Tailored to Your Needs
By Tasha McKenzie-Hayes

There are lots of direct care service providers in your area (and beyond), who would love to take you on as a consumer. Most offer identical services that are geared towards ensuring that you live a full and productive life from the comfort of your own home. These services include:

  • Companionship
  • Meal preparation
  • Housekeeping
  • Grocery shopping
  • Medication reminders
  • Grooming
  • Laundry services
  • Mail assistance/organization
  • Bathing
  • Mobility assistance
  • Transferring and positioning
  • Toileting and incontinence care
  • Oral hygiene
  • Feeding

What makes some direct care service providers standout from the crowd is the level of customer service that is extended to you. Prior to starting services, the agency of your choice should have a conversation with you to help you determine exactly which services you would benefit from the most. The services provided should make you feel as if they were tailored just for you. Be sure to ask a lot of questions and let them know what characteristics you are looking for in your home health aide. You may have to try out a few aids before finding one that you are comfortable with, so it is important that the agency makes you feel comfortable with speaking openly about your wishes. Always remember, it is your RIGHT to choose! So if your agency is not meeting your needs or giving your case the attention it deserves, speak to your service coordinator about choosing a different agency that will cater to you, to your satisfaction. Establishing a good relationship with your direct care provider is an essential component to receiving great care. It will also give you and your loved ones peace of mind knowing that everyone is working together to make sure you are well taken care of at home.
