It is back-to-school time and Let's Move Pittsburgh has some good advice to make sure that your children have a healthy year ahead.

School Lunches
Let's face it: Packing a wholesome school lunch every day can be stressful! But with a little advance planning it is possible to provide a nutrient-packed meal for your child. Here are some tips:

  • Pack ice water instead of juice to cut down on added sugar
  • Variety is important; try not to pack the same foods every day
  • Include at least one fruit and one veggie in every lunch
  • Skip the salty snacks and chips; they have the potential to create a preference for processed foods
  • Keep it simple; including too many food items can sometimes have the unwanted effect of making children eat less
  • Include your child in decisions about what to goes into the meal

Healthy Celebrations
How many school holiday and birthday celebrations have you attended where sugary treats like cupcakes, cookies and candy were served? Probably more than you can count. Next time consider bringing in a healthier treat like low-fat yogurt parfaits or fruit kabobs. You can also talk to your child's teacher about other ways to celebrate, such as a fun art activity or a special privilege for the day.
