Zonta Club of Pittsburgh Presents Award to Midwife Center Director During International Women’s Month

When the Midwife Center, the only out-of-hospital birthing center in Western PA, threatened to shut down, Christine Haas knew she had to get involved.  Moving from a founding member of the board for the new Birthing Center to board president, and most recently to executive director, Christine works tirelessly to improve and empower the lives of women.

March is internationally recognized as Women’s Month.  This is the time to show appreciation for women who dedicate outstanding service to help others.  The Zonta Club of Pittsburgh has chosen Christine as the 2011 “Woman Who Makes a Difference.” Christine has been the Executive Director of the Midwife Center for Birth and Women’s Health since 2002.

“It is truly inspirational to see that Christine has made a difference in so many women’s lives. Her unwavering commitment to empowering women can be seen through the Center. For example, women are accepted for maternity care, regardless of insurance status or ability to pay.” said Lee Fogarty, Ph.D., co-chair of the program committee for the Zonta Club of Pittsburgh and lieutenant governor of Zonta District 4, which includes parts of Canada, western New York, and western Pennsylvania.

The Midwife Center has grown from a struggling care center to a million-dollar, nonprofit program under Christine’s direction. She oversaw the acquisition and renovation of a building in the Strip District to expand The Midwife Center. Today, the Center is able to offer “With Woman Fridays,” a special program that enables women without insurance to receive care free of charge, when other centers would most likely be unable to provide for them. Christine knows and appreciates the role of birthing options and midwifery in empowering women, and she strives to make it available to every woman.

Fogarty says, “Her dedication to the care of women shows that she truly deserves this award.  The Zonta Club of Pittsburgh is proud to say that her efforts exemplify the objectives of our organization.”  Christine has also formed strong connections within the community.  In order to further the goals of the Center, she has formed relationships with city, state, and federal officials.

The Zonta Club will be presenting Christine with the award at the Rivers Club at One Oxford Center on Thursday, March 10th. The event also serves as a fundraiser for the Zonta Club of Pittsburgh, and will take place at 6:00 pm. Tickets are $50, or $75 for sponsor tickets, and include dinner and a cash bar.  For more information or to attend, please email pittsburghzonta@gmail.com.

The Zonta Club of Pittsburgh is a chapter of Zonta International.  Founded in 1919, Zonta International is a world-wide organization that advances the status of women and girls through service, education and advocacy.
